Backup and Restore won't backup contacts

This is really frustrating. Every time I do a factory reset after a system update, I use the backup and restore feature to backup all the basic phone data (call logs, messages, contacts, accessibility settings). Every time, even though I have all of those options checked, the contacts never get backed up -- I the call logs, messages, and settings are all auto-restored after the reset, but the contacts never are. They are never even backed up in the first place because even when I do a manual restore of the contacts, nothing is restored to the contacts list. I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this because it seems like some flaw in the backup & restore process, since everything else works fine except for the contacts.
