There's a known issue with BUA right now- they've been trying to work on it for some time. Mine was ok for a little bit, and then it kept syncing multiple times a day on my phone, and I could no longer access my contacts online. So since I'm rooted, I said to hell with it, and disabled the service. My advice would be to have the Verizon store manually transfer your contacts over if you have an old phone. Otherwise, you can see if it will let you log in to BUA online and view your contacts. If it does, export the list, then import it to your Gmail account and then sync. And don't even use BUA while you have the phone- Google backs them up automatically, so there's no need for BUA ever again, unless you plan on going back to a dumbphone at some point. Not a bad idea to make a backup copy of your contacts every few months or so in case something happens with Google- you can export them in the Contacts options.
