backup assistant

I'm assuming you want to stop using the service completely. I do as well. I don't see a point since all of my contacts in my phone book are already backed up onto my GMail.

I did find this digging through their FAQs for Backup Assistant:

Verizon Wireless FAQ page said:
The Backup Assistant Service may be terminated immediately without liability upon sending notice to the e-mail address You provided during your registration. You may end your use of the Backup Assistant Service at any time by terminating service with Verizon Wireless or removing the Backup Assistant application from Your handset. No refunds shall be granted for any fees paid in advance. Upon termination You will no longer have access to data, messages, files and other material You previously stored.

However, on my unrooted Inc I don't have the option to remove the app.

You may need to call 611 from your phone to have them remove it at the tech support level. Option 3. If you get a bunch more options, hit '0' to get straight into the operator queue. I'm on hold with them right now.

e: It looks like they may not be able to do it. Depending on how important it is to you, I suppose you could wipe the phone and not reactivate BA after setting it back up. But that's too much effort for me.

e2: Just got off the phone with them (23 minutes). They still don't know, but they also recommended wiping the phone but only if it was causing issues. The tech said he will look into it further and email me whether or not he finds an answer. Hopefully FroYo will have it configured better (and get here soon, dammit!!)

Now I am glad I passed this app up if its messing up .I really did not see the use for it since I have it backed up with google ;) Hopefullly they get it fixed before long I leaving it alone thanks for the warning.

PS:
When they correct whatever is wrong with it then I assume the user wont have to do anything else and it will actually be fixed then ?

Yea I was on the phone wither too . They said hard reset was the only way . That's alot of work .

The VZW tech never emailed me, so I guess that means he wasn't able to find a solution to this.

It's certainly not worth a factory reset, at least not to me. I'll keep this thread subscribed and update it if I do hear anything, though.

What exactly is the problem you are having? I use back up assistant with zero problems...

This is absurd. Verizon should be utterly ashamed that they released an application with absolutely no way to uninstall it.

what about titanium backup to remove it if your rooted? i havent done it yet, but was thinking about it. if you do this, then there is nothing for it to sync...correct?

This is what I did to disable my backup assistant:

(copied and pasted from another site)

There may be other ways to disable backup assistant, but follow these steps to remove duplicate contacts and backup assistant without having to factory reset. Please be aware that I just tinkered around until I got the desired result. I'm no expert and I have no idea if this effects the phone in any other way. I did this over the weekend and everything is working perfectly on my phone. So proceed at your own risk, I don't want to get any pm's about how your phone blew up. I'm just trying to help out here.

1) Be sure to have all your contacts backed up to your Gmail account. Check online before proceeding to step 2.

2) Log into your My Verizon account. Go to the contacts tab, sort by list view and select all contacts. Delete the entire list. There's a deleted contacts tab as well. Select that and delete anything that's in there.

3) Go into your Incredible settings tab, select applications, manage applications. Do not sort or filter, allow list to populate. Select Sync Service, (icon resembles backup assistant icon) select clear data.

4) Also in manage applications scroll down to backup assistant, select clear data. This should do it.

5) To verify backup assistant is now disabled, select settings, accounts and sync, then under manage accounts, select backup assistant. You should be looking at a license agreement screen.

No more backup assistant, no factory reset.

that worked...only thing i wish it did was uncheck the green circle next to backup assistant.

While Verizon does offer this option, it is voluntary. There is no charge for it, so if you decide to install it on your phone, then that is completely up to you. As far as the duplicate contacts, that can be fixed by filing a trouble ticket. You will have to call in to Tech Support and ask them to do just that. A hard reset doesn't take a lot of time either.

I've heard about the Facebook app causing contact duplicates.

I've been using backup assistant since I got this phone as well and have
had ZERO problems.
It's a great free service and I'm glad they have it.

*I would look into other apps as the cause of duplicates .. like the Facebook problem
