I'm switching to Verizon (from Sprint) soon with a Moto X Pure. I'd like to get a backup phone...probably used but I can spring for a new one too. Any recommendations? Would like to spend around $150.

Would a Sprint phone like a Samsung S4 or S3 work on Verizon?

The best place to look is Swappa. Just look under their Verizon section and they'll have every phone that is capable of working on Verizon listed with a price range of the devices being sold currently. For around ~$170 (there's always room for negotiation) you can get a 2014 Moto X with bamboo back. If you get your MXPE and like it, I would recommend getting the 2014 model as a backup phone because if you ever have to use it, the features are almost the same (Moto Display, Voice, etc.).

Those Sprint phones won't work.

I'd take this advice.

Second gen Moto X for Verizon would be a good pick if you like the Moto features.

Note though, the second gen likely will not get Marshmallow - if Android OS updates are a high priority for you.

If you just need a backup phone, you can get a 2nd gen moto e for $10 at best buy on black Friday.

I don't think that you can get a new moto x 2014 for $150? Used possibly...

There are a countless amount of backup phones available. Even phones from 2011 would be more than serviceable as a back up. Hell I still use my original droid incredible from time to time.

2011 phones are pretty long in the tooth. Outdated software, lower performance (or at best equal), less battery life, probably significantly depleted battery, poor radio etc. The Moto e 2nd gen is cheaper when on sale, and is new with warranty. obviously if you have an old one then keep it as a backup but I wouldn't acquire one now.
