Bad Battery

Hi, my phone is a mess. I don't know if I have a bad battery or what?
Around a month or two or go I started getting a really heated battery. It was around the time I decided to root to MIUI. I eventually got it, bricked my phone a few days later, and ever since have been on stock. (Aside from the boot screen coming up with a lock that's unlocked with custom under it, I'm aware it voids my warranty. Although, would that weird boot screen show that I have rooted/bricked?)

Anyways, when I charge my battery gets quite hot. When I use skype, my battery gets even hotter. I tend to use skype a lot, mostly overnight. This becomes a problem for me. My battery drains A LOT and the phone heats up. So, this has been happening for almost 2 months?

Well, today I woke up to my phone at 5% battery. There was also an error : A yellow hazard sign with a thermostat next to it. My phone was the hottest I've ever seen it become. Almost to the point where it was too hot to touch. I'm assuming that error/sign is not a good sign..

Anything I can do? I don't want to end up killing my battery, but it might seem like that eventually.

It's not unusual for the phone to get fairly hot when your doing things that use a lot of processor (like skype) and charging at the same time, but the overheat warning indicates a problem, especially if you weren't actually using the phone at the time.

This could be a hardware issue (phone or battery), but it could also be a software process running out of control and running the cpu full tilt. First question, have you rebooted the phone? That will generally kill a run away process, although it might come back later. If this turns up a particular process or program that's running out of control, we can address whatever that is (or at least try). If it doesn't show anything eating up cpu, then I'd suggest trying a factory reset. It's the first thing Verizon would do anyway. If that doesn't resolve anything, you should probably try to find out how to get rid of the unlocked / custom warning. I'm pretty sure Verizon will tell you your on your own if they see that.

Skype was at the top; like it usually is. Last night it was at 35% but not as hot as normal.
At times the processor for skype will get red (which I assume is meaning it's going out of control.) I'll try not using skype to see if that helps.

Alright; few days on. Can't really go on without skype. I use it to talk to a certain friend over night. (Sort of calms my anxiety.)
Anyways; yeah, still skype making it hot. Although at the moment it's a bit hot from charging, but I assume that's normal.
That being said - it's more of the sim card getting hot. (Bottom section of the phone) rather than the upper part where the batter is.
I'll try a hard reset tomorrow- if that's what verizon does, no point in giving it to them.
