Can anything be done about the absolutely sh***y pictures that the Droid takes?

Try using the Vignette app. I like having the toy camera look.

The funny thing with my Droid photos is that it's only the flash pictures that come out atrociously bad -- the natural light photos are sometimes pretty good. It's almost as though the flash sync is off a little. I am hoping for improvements in 2.1, but I hear there's not much new there.

Using the sharpening feature in Photoshop or similar software and adjusting any color casts and exposure can also help.

Keep in mind that the lens on the Droid is less than 1/4" in diameter, which is miniscule even compared to a cheap point-and-shoot camera, so there's a practical limit on sharpness and contrast.

I doubt it. Depends, though, on your particular concerns with it. In my case the sensor itself is the problem.
