Battery capacity hack?

I am fairly happy with the optimus s but I am a little disappointed with the battery life. I sometimes need to use the internet or GPS for extended periods of time and it just doesn't last as long as I would like it to. I have seen those portable USB battery chargers and I was going to buy one and cut it down and mount it in my case. But then I thought why dont I just get another battery and wire them in parallel. Does anyone know if that would work? I dont want to fry either my battery or my phone but shouldnt it just be that simple? Just a little fine soldering work and boom double the capacity without making that much bigger.

On this note I believe I saw in this forum that the batterys for the optimus one P500/ TP509 batteries are compatible with the optimus s. Is that true?

Sure you could wire as many batteries in parallel as you'd like, but how are you going to get them to fit under the backplate of the phone?

I'm trying to wrap my brain around why you would want to do this when you can just pick up some cheap spare batteries on Ebay and swap them out when one gets low.
