Battery charging time

Ok so I returned my Pixel 2 XL because I was not happy with the poor display color saturation. I currently have the original Pixel XL and I am very happy with it. Now that Google has added saturated color to the latest update I am once again considering upgrading. The one thing holding me back is the reported long time it takes to charge the phone to 100%. How real is this problem? What kind of charging times are people experiencing? Is the charging time throttled while the screen is in use? That would be a big problem especially while driving with GPS hooked up to the charger.

The phone fast charges at the lower % but once it gets around 70-80 mark it starts to slow down. "Soft landing" as I have heard it called before. Other phones also do similar things as well.

Is there a noticeable slowdown while the screen is on? For example while using GPS?

I believe it will only go so fast with the screen on (my S8+ did the same thing before as well -- wouldn't go full on charge with the screen on).
