No will cause certain apps to crash. Will tun in backround and constantly over heat phone. Especially clean master thtz a no go.

It's needed - to uninstall any you have installed - AND to uninstall any other apps written by the same developer. "Cleaning RAM" and killing apps are two things you DON'T want to do in Android. Read Multitasking the Android Way to see why.) Anyone who writes an app like that is saying "I don't really understand how Android works, but I want to make money selling apps". I don't buy apps from people who don't know the environment they're writing for. Even if the app is free. Sometimes free is too much.

I recently tested a number of "optimizing" apps. What I found was that my phone ran faster and my battery lasted longer between charges - after I uninstalled each one. They all waste more battery than they save, and slow the phone up. (You'll understand why if you read Dianne's article.)

If someone writes one that really works, I'll be one of the first to start a thread telling the world about it. (Greenify can save you battery - but it works the way Android is supposed to work. So can an app like Startup Manager.)

@bettz:
Not naming any names, but they're one of the worst. If you want to be a wall hugger, run their apps.

You're better without those. I had clean master for a year and the experience turned worse and worse with each update. Let's just say my phone doesn't overheat anymore after getting rid of it.

DO NOT use any task killers, RAM memory optimizers/boosters, battery savers/repairers, cache cleaners, antivirus, etc etc. None of that stuff is necessary..

Like Rukbat said, such apps are actually counterproductive and some are just plain evil. They actually waste power, disrupt critical system processes and degrade performance. Not to mention the nag ads many throw up.

To understand why such apps are so bad, read the article Rukbat linked. For more - and fun to read - info go back in this thread and read posts # 3, 23, 27, 31, 33 & 180 - especially 180. This thread covers Battery Doctor, which is particularly horrible, and other offensive apps.

In short, don't try to micromanage your phone. Don't install software that attempts to either. Let Android handle things as intended. It will automatically optimize operation if you let it.

Don't worry be happy. Relax and enjoy simply using your phone.

My battery doesn't seem to be lasting as long as it used to. I'm not sure if it's the Lollipop uprgrade? I've done two factory resets over the past two months, that only seems to boost my phone for a couple of weeks. I've tried Cleanmaster, but that doesn't make any difference - it's actually sort of annoying - so I've deleted it. I don't have any new apps that I didn't have pre-Lollipop. I used to be able to get through an entire day and still have 30% battery by 11PM, but now I run it down to 0% by around 9PM... According to GSAM Battery Monitor, I get about 2 hours 8 minutes of screen time per charge - I used to get over 3 hours...

The phone is almost 1 year old. Do you think I might just need a new battery??

Batteries are usually good for about 500 charges before they get noticeably weaker. But that's not set in stone. A battery may last more or less than that. Figuring charging once a day like most users that's about 350/yr. Plus, sounds like you run the battery very low regularly, which is pretty hard on battery life. Running to below 20-30% really stresses the battery.

I think it's very possible that it's time for a new battery.

Fast money Playa the question I asked was for receiving answers about battery doctor and cleaning apps. The pros and cons. If you need help with your battery question open a new thread and you'll receive plenty of help here.
