Battery Drops Multiple Percents at Once

Earlier tonight my battery was at 12%. Power saver was on. I was loading Twitter, and then all of a sudden the battery dropped to 8%. I was able to plug it in about 5 minutes later when I got back to my car when it was down to 6%. It then charged for about 12 minutes while I was driving home and charged all the way back up to 17%.

This isn't the first time it's happened. I normally don't let my battery get lower than 10%, but sometimes I have no choice. I want to say another time a few weeks ago it got down to 5%, and the EPS mode turned on. However, it was only on for about 15 minutes or so, when it dropped to 1%, and eventually turned off. Another time the battery was between 10-15% after being off the charger for just over 24 hours, and then the phone just died.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is my battery showing signs of becoming faulty? And is there a way to fix this? I'm wondering if the phone isn't reading the correct percentage. I'm still averaging 15-19 hours of battery life, according to GSam. Also, I've had it since release date last year.

I seem to recall reading that the accuracy of measuring the battery level can decrease when you get that low. Does that ever happen when the battery level is much higher?

In general, though, you should try to avoid allowing the battery to get down below 30-40% on a regular basis--it can shorten the battery's overall lifespan.

No, I've never noticed it occurring above 10-15%. I usually charge it when I go to bed, and it's usually around the 15-25% range. I'd say maybe 3 or 4 times in the past year has it fully depleted and shut off. Thanks for your advice, you're probably correct that the accuracy decreases when it gets low since I haven't noticed any other abnormal behavior at higher levels. Guess I might need to switch the automatic EPS to 10% for those emergency times.

Battery percentage is really a pointless feature that Apple users live and die by.

Also constantly polling your battery reduces battery life!!

Power Menu tells all!

I can attest to the idea of the % being less accurate at lower levels. This has definitely happened to me too.

IIRC if your battery % behaves erratically, one of the things you can do is to try to "calibrate" it (so to speak). Since it's usually software that determines voltage levels of the battery in order to predict estimated time left (and thus, % battery remaining), it can get inaccurate over time as conditions change (like the battery cell aging and holding less charge than it did before). To help the software get a better gauge on things, charge the phone fully and use it until it shuts off from lack of charge. Keep the phone off and plug it in until it's fully charged and proceed using it as normal. In a lot of cases, it'll help the % reading to be more accurate since now you've "refreshed" the software's memory on what fully charged and fully discharged is.

But as another poster mentioned above, batteries do not like to be discharged down to 0%. While there are software and hardware safeguards to prevent the cell(s) from dipping below the safe voltage, it'll unnecessarily stress the battery and shorten its lifespan. Keep the battery in the 30%-80% range and as close to room temp (or slightly below) as possible and you'll maximize its lifespan.
