Battery Killing Apps

The other day I was on a flight and put my phone into Airplane mode. I fell asleep on takeoff and was surprised 30ish minutes later when I found my N6P very hot in my my pocket. I was even more surprised my phone fell from 90+% to ~60%.

Looking at my active apps, the only one running that was not "stock google" (like mail and calendar) was USAToday. I killed that and immediately my phone cooled down and battery consumption returned to acceptable.

I have now deleted that app from the phone.

Since then, i have been doing an experiment and killing most background task regularly. Battery life now seems outstanding.

So, my list of battery consuming apps starts with USAToday.

Seems very strange, my first thought was that it was searching for the cell network, which will kill the battery pretty fast if it searches indefinitely, but you said it was in airplane mode - maybe the LTE antenna stayed active for some weird reason. Do another test with your phone in airplane mode for an hour or so on your desk or something, and see if the same thing occurs. If not, I wouldn't worry about it too much. If the phone gets hot every time you put it in airplane mode, something's probably defective. Clear your cache (from recovery mode) or wipe the phone and start over - if that doesn't fix it, RMA it. This is all assuming USAToday isn't the culprit. Either way, don't waste too much time on it.

Not sure if it's still an issue, but I had issues with GasBuddy in the recent past when logged in with my account. When not logged in receiving notifications from it, the app was fine.

Fenix (Twitter app) used to be an issue as well but has been better since I started using it again.

There was an update for GasBuddy in the Play store today and I checked to see what it was fixing and it stated it was fixing a battery drain some users had noted.

USA Today never runs in the background for me. Amazon Kindle and Evernote somehow spontaneously do, even after hibernating them.

I had an issue with Lux, great app but a hog, in my experience with the battery.

I had an issue playing Two Dots the other day... My 6P got hot and my battery was draining fast while I was playing it... This is not a game that should be working the 6P very hard... I rebooted my phone then changed it and the game was fine after that.

Yes, two dots got me too. For the past few weeks if my Note 4 wasn't plugged in, the battery would die after a few minutes of playing, even though it would be charged before I started playing. Today it was at 100% and it happened again. This time it wouldn't turn back on. Now I'm out of a phone.

Two Dots uses an amazing amount of power. Is it doing SETI calculations in the background?

I finally uninstalled it.
