Battery life on rooted phone with custom ROM

Hi guys,

I'm just wondering what kind of battery life you all are getting since rooting. I have tried both BlazerROM and FreeGS3 and haven't really noticed much of a difference over stock. I generally charge my phone every night and on an average day my phone is off the charger for ~14-15 hours. A typical day would be 2-3 hours of screen on time with maybe 30 minutes of talk time and I finish the day with battery to spare.

Undeniably this is good battery life and overall I am very happy with it but I see people reporting much better in the developer threads. One guy said that his phone had been off the charger for 14 hours and he was still at 80%. Of course it may have been sitting in his pocket all day.....

I just wanted to see what everyone else's experience has been? Are there any special tweaks or apps that you have frozen/removed that have increased your battery life?

I'm sure that we'll see some major improvements once custom kernels start rolling in. :)

I've been using the team sonic Rom. The first couple of days the battery life wasn't much better but after awhile it has gotten much better.

Maybe that's my problem. I'm a flashaholic and I can't seem to leave it alone, hehe.

I'm on the Team Sonic Free_GS3 ROM too. I seem to get around 20-ish ours of battery life, depending on how much I use the phone of course. Around three hours of screen on time. I haven't removed of deleted any apps other that the ones already removed from the ROM to begin with.

And I'm not buying the 14 hours/80% thing. Even with perfect signal, I can't see how that would be possible, unless as you said the phone isn't being used at all.

Its possible. The other day I didn't use my phone for a whole day and at 21 hours I was still at 65%. It was on wifi the hole time so 80% is possible. I would never tell someone thats what they should expect though as thats not realistic usage. I get around 18-20 hours out of mine with moderate usage.

I actually don't find too much of a difference with FreeGS3 flashed on my phone. Although my battery life is fantastic so I'm not complaining. I spend most of my day on wifi but I also spend a good part of my day underground where I have no bars whatsoever. I average about 16 hours with 2-3 hours screen on time but I always have about 40% remaining.

Ok. These roms all have the stock kernel. The kernel is the main driving factor for battery life. The rom really doesn't effect the battery very much unless there's a memory leak. Then it will drain faster.

We currently have 2 kernels to choose from. One is basically stock but is insecure so that you can adb flash. However there aren't any battery tweaks.

The other one (kettle corn) has some battery saving tweaks but is still very immature at this point. The dev for kettle corn is very good, so I would think that it will be pretty stable even though immature.

I'm wondering if this is normal on my android system? Is it suppose to be that high?

This is a reporting issue. It really isn't that high. Several roms already have a fix for this.

So I guess I should be waiting for an update from Phantom.

Actually I didn't wipe my data from the beggining. I only wipe cache/dalvik and install Phantom's Rom. Maybe that was my mistake. So I'm going to wipe everything start from scratch and see if that would help :)

Yup, the best idea is to always wipe data, cache and dalvik (I was taught to do it three times) before flashing a new ROM. Many times you can get away with just wiping cache/dalvik when upgrading versions of the same ROM.
