Battery life... This normal?

New nexus 6p owner here, switched from iphone 6s. I had used the Galaxy S5 when it was new and jumped back to iPhone due to att updating & bugs.

Nevertheless, loving the phones software and interface. My only concern is battery life.... Is this normal for the 6p, or is my low service really talking a toll?

Verizon service is 0 to 3 bars here in the office and I'm also connected to WiFi (no WiFi calling with Verizon) and I'm going home each day with around 20% and maybe 2.5h Screen on time. Normal use consists of browsing web, texting, YouTube... No gaming.

I know iPhones rock in standby, but my question is: is this normal for Android and the 6p? And if I were to switch carriers, how much do you think it would increase my battery life?

I really don't like the idea of having to babysit all the settings all the time & tweaking it to nothing in order to make it though a day. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks so much!

If your signal is bad, in the battery graph it shows as red, or black, then yes it will kill your battery just like that.

Attached is the details. Do you think this plays a pretty big factor in my drain? For instance If i switch carriers to someone who offers better service or wifi calling, what percentage do you think it would improve my battery life? Just in your opinion.

Oranges and reds are bad. The better your signal the longer your battery well last, if it's just sitting idle. Percentage wise..... Idk. It's hard to tell. Your battery would def last longer than it is now. Might be able to get through a whole day on a single charge.

If the carrier I go with has has WiFi calling with similar signal, will it still have a negative effect on battery life or will the WiFi calling make it have "good reception"?

It has nothing to do with the signal - your phone simply isn't sleeping - likely due to the wifi/bluetooth wakelock issues many are experiencing with Nougat. Check out your Android OS in your battery stats and there is no doubt that your "keep awake" is likely through the roof. You can see from the picture you posted that the phone is not sleeping when the screen is off. This is due to the wakelocks

Ummmm no. Bad signal will torch a battery. I mean the wakelock thing doesn't help either, but bad signal is just as bad. He could turn the radio off, and use Wi-Fi. That might help.

I agree with jlukes, one look at your screenshot and it's obvious where the problem is. I suspect a rogue app that is causing your phone not to sleep.

OK here is a photo of the keep awake screen. I have since charged the phone some and it was streaming Bluetooth audio through my car.

Does keep awake include the time the screen is on, or is it specifically time the screen is off that the phone is still working?

If there happens to be a Rouge app, how could I determine the culprit?

Thanks again for your support

To the best of my knowledge, if there is a problem app and you do not know what it is, you'll have to uninstall your apps one at a time and see with each deletion if your battery capacity has gotten better.

This is a tedious process, I know, but by proceas of elimination, you should be able to find your culprit.

Well that's annoying.... Lol times like this make me miss an iPhone... But pretty much everything else makes me not.

Before I start picking apps that I think may be problems... Is there a chance it's Bluetooth being on all day?

I think this is a nougat bug. It's been like this since I upgraded to. Android OS is close to the top of the list. Now that I think about it, it's kind of been like that since MM.

If you switched to say t mobile you could turn airplane midr on and wifi calling so you can recieve all calls and texts still. My moto z force and Galaxy S7E both had wifi calling from verizon and i just turn airplane mode on when im at home with wifi calling on, saves a ton of battery atleast an hour + of screen time

Whenever my phone starts to act up, I do following things before I start uninstalling or factory resetting the device...
1) Kill all apps in the task manager
2) Open Settings -> Apps and USB -> tap on "Cache" -> empty it
3) Power down device
4) format cache partition

(oh, and for the knowwises here: I know that 1) and 2) should not be necessary because Android systems management should cover this nicely ... well it does most of the times, but not always)

I have to do this about once every half year and it helped me on my Nexus 5 as well as on the 6P now.
After updates (no matter if security updates or OS updates) I always format the cache partition.

Only if all of this fails, I would start fiddling around with the installation.

Other question: why is your Wifi always on? You could make it sleep as well (somewhere in the wifi settings)
Might help, too

It's clear from that screenshot that something is keeping your device awake. You'll have to do some further investigation to determine what.

Along with that your cellular signal is horrible and that will kill a battery like nothing else. For that issue I'd suggest putting the device in Airplane mode if you know you're going to be in an area where your signal is always troublesome. You could use Hangouts and the Hangouts Dialer to make outgoing calls on WiFi; no real solution for incoming calls.

Note that in the History details screen you should normally expect Awake time to closely mirror Screen on time (as shown).

If it doesn't then you need to find out what's causing the disparity. A tool like GSam Battery Monitor Pro https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...etails?id=com.gsamlabs.bbm.pro&token=vCM10N_w (there's also a free version) will help you to get to the root cause.

OK cool. I've downloaded the battery app last night and I found an app that was refreshing mail or some notification sync every 15 minutes in the background... May not have been it, but it's worth a try.

Thanks again for all your help guys.

That could be the culprit, for sure! That kind of background device activity could certainly play a part in your battery drainage.

Good luck!
