Hey everyone. So ive had this problem with my battery for a couple of days now and ive only just realised what is happening and how bad it is by keeping an eye on it.

So, ive had my phone since august'13 on vodaphone. When ever I am home my phone is on charge so it's unusual that Im having issues with it. My phone can be anywhere been 100% and 30%, my phone tturns off and the battery is completely dead.. totally random out of nowhere. Now I originally just thaught that my phone was just playing up, resetting and not turning back on etc.... but not till I investigated it a bit more.

It has happened twice today, (I will put a screenshot here soon of the battery graph) my phone is completely healthy, then all of a sudden while I am using it.. my phone turns off. Now, the last time I was on 81% battery I think it was. so I tried to turn it back on, no luck. It turned off after the samsung logo. So I tried again immediately and it actually worked.. only now I am on 7% battery life! In a mater of 1 minute it has gone from circa 80% to 7% in one simple reset.

Is my battery shot already? Unbelievable its really starting to bug me now that I know this is happening!
I've tried searching but all I keep coming across is people's using alot of battery when running apps etc.. which is understandable sometimes.

Hope its a software issue as I love this phone!

Regards,

H

EDIT: HERE IS THE SCREENSHOT.
You can clearly tell that before the phone turns itself off/crashes/resets its in the green near the top of the greph.. then when it gets turned back on its practically all drained...

Re: battery - reset and sudden drop

As you can see from the below image.. the battery graph show where my phone was reset. . Before it the battery was in a good green status then after the reset it was in deep red nearly running out on 7% upon startup again! Now every time before that it has just been completely running out of juice so ive been none the wiser about it!

Happened to me a couple days ago as well. Had my phone fully charged in the morning and I turned it off as I wouldn't need it for a couple of hours because I have class early. When I turned it on it had dropped to 84%
First time I've had this issue so not sure what's causing it, haven't had it since. I am on a custom ROM so it could have been an issue with the software.
Anybody know why this happens?

Re: battery - reset and sudden drop

Sounds like a bad battery to me. Does if appear swollen, if you lay it on a table does it spin easy if you press down a corner? That's what my last phone's battery did, went from 100 to 3% in a minute or so.
Samsung released a statement they would replace the battery for free if you take it in to your carrier.

Thanks for the posts guys. I have updated the first post with a link to the battery graph at the bottom, take a look its very weird!

Ill try the spin test in a couple of hours hpferox. Though the battery fits lovely and snug in the phone.

Mine is fine, first time it's happened so I don't think it's a bad battery.

It was more for the OP, but in your case since your rooted did you try wake lock detector or better battery stats to see what was waking up the battery?

The phone was off though so it couldn't have been a wake lock

Idk, just tossing out ideas. Is it going from hot to cold temps and vice versa? It's a big % for not being on even.

My old phone did it regularly even in normal temperatures, this is the first time it happens to my S4 though

Wow this is crazy I went of this forum looking for answers for my problem and I found that others are having the same problem.

Well I just got back from the T-mobile store and they tested my battery and found it to be defective. They told me that the little strip to the
opposite side of the battery connector was almost red and it should be white. That I needed a new battery.

So I just ordered a new battery from Amazon, I hope this corrects this problem because I really depend on my phone.

Good to hear im not the only one with this issue. My phone is of a normal temperature and doesn't really get that hot during charging either. Only temp rise is when it,s charging and the screen is on a bright white screen while ive left it rrunnng on its own.

GW, I've just tried to look at your fix by checking the colour of that part of the battery, but unfortunately mine is normal.

Tonight it has turned off again this time at the 50% mark. When I turned if back on (literally 30 seconds later) it was on 0%.. **** take.

So, placed it on charge and that is when I read your post GW. I looked, unfortunately nothing there. But... when I turned the phone back on.. it was no longer on the circa 40% battery life It was on bbefore I checked the battery.. its now on 76%... eh??? The graoh on this link will show you what I mean.. you can see it drop and rise almost immediately.

I think its the battery tbh. I cant play any of my favorite games gutted :(

Definitely a defective battery. I'd call Samsung and ask for a replacement

I had the same problem, solved with a new battery...its a battery problem...simple test: take the battery out and see if it spins on a flat surface..swollen battery and needs immediate replacement. Samsung is aware of this battery problem and offers free replacement.

So you just contacted then direct and they delivered to your house?

The statement they released stated that you need to take it to your carriers store / Samsung outlet. Other users here have posted they've emailed with proof of their receipt and have had one shipped to them. Not sure how this would work if you got a used phone though.
