Battery Tracking Apps

I've been a big fan of GSAM and occasionally I would use BetterBatteryStats. I installed GSAM on my Nexus 5 and it wouldn't work. I emailed the developer and he provided the following response:

Unfortunately, Google has removed the ability to obtain Battery Statistics in KitKat
https://android.googlesource.com/platform/frameworks/base/+/3714141d287c965ea3451831dd5167f63f8db87b
I'm working on alternative mechanisms to retrieve the data, however for now, no battery monitor that harvests statistics will work on KitKat I'm afraid.

This really stinks. I'm not sure why Google wants to take this functionality away.

As the one legged man wonders why he has to buy a pair of shoes and not just one. Why get something that will never be used just cause that's what's offered?
