Being able to root or use the g1 without a SIM card help?

So i got the g1 from my cousin the other day because i was planning on using it as a media device, like just for music and wi-fi etc.
But whenever i turn the phone on it goes to a locked screen that says 'No SIM card'

So i searched around and found that i have to use adb shell in the Android SDK.
But i'm a noob.
I really have no clue how to work adb shell
And when i open adb shell in the Command Line I get the '$' symbol, and that is apparently ok. Then i'm supposed to type 'su' to get root on my phone. But when i type 'su' it tells me Permission Denied.
Anybody can please help explain the full process of using the phone without a SIM or possibly rooting the phone without a sim!
