Best apps for what? All depends on what you use your phone for. If I had to pick five apps that I would install on every phone (assuming the base functionality is not already included and a suitable experience), I would probably pick:

1. Nova Launcher
2. Dropbox
3. Wifi Analyzer
4. Cerberus
5. Google Authenticator

3 - Dropbox and Box.com (get both...you will need the storage)
4 - Team Battery Bar and Battery Widget reborn (You will need to track battery usage closely)
5 - Display Brightness (Extremely intuitive and easy to use brightness widget)

Most hated: official YouTube app (never once played a video without freezing/crashing)

My current favorite is Place. It's a location based message app where you can follow your favorite places not persons. It's quite new so not too many messages yet but it has the potential.
