I went to Best Buy last night to pre-order the EVO and I was taxed. I read here that a user called corp and they said there was a glitch in their system and they were working on a fix. So I came back to best buy to pre order another EVO and there was no more tax. So I got my 4.38 back from my last nights pre-orders. Just thought I'd pass it on for those that they did tax.
Funny thing was when I walked in. I asked first about the tax. On my receipt it said I only had a balance of 50. Then I told them that Best Buy said there was glitch. They said they have not heard anything. So I proceeded and told them I was here for another pre-order. Once they rang it up. Only 50.00. No tax. I asked them to refund me the tax from last nights transaction. So it may be fixed I'm assuming.
Yeah, did Best Buy's online survey that was listed on my receipt. I was pretty critical. I got a call from the store manager and then from a person from their corporate offices in MN. The store manager was empathetic, but no action was taken. The corporate guy said that he understood and would communicate the issue with some execs. I told him that I don't think that Best Buy is pocketing extra money, but if I decide not to get the EVO (fat chance, huh? ), and give the gift card to my mother, she would also be taxed on her purchase. Thus, sales tax would be taken twice. In CA that would be 20% sales tax!
The issue for them is that the pre-order is under a SKU in their system for the purchase of some merchandise (the EVO) so tax would apply. However, since I am not buying the phone, rather I am buying a gift card in consideration for them to "hold" a phone for me, no tax should have been applied.
I'm glad if they have remedied the situation for future pre-orders.
The reps there said they were going to contact all of the pre order people to refund the tax. So at least they are doing the right thing. At least this best buy is.
I preordered on Saturday and got charged tax. The receipt says PRESELL SPRINT HTC EVO 4G and below it, it says ITEM TAX. I asked the rep if it would be applied to the price of the phone and he said yes.
I preordered mine the 1st day it came out and I had the same problem at first but then the salesman called somebody and fixed it right then and there with no tax
I didn't even realize this. I just assumed since I was charged tax it would apply when I used the gift card on the 4th. I guess I need to go and get this corrected tomorrow. Thanks for the heads up.

Just got back from bestbuy getting my tax refunded. Word must have not gotten down to all store because they had no idea what to do. I was standing there for about 20 minutes before they just decided to pop the register open and give me my $4.31 back.
