Best strategy/how to. please: root and install custom rom (maybe)

I have an old VM701 with a 16g microSD card that's on its last legs, and a new one waiting in a box with a new, better quality, 32g card. The current one has served me well for over a year, but it has been degrading gradually since getting dunked in water and has gotten pretty dinged up besides. I want to test out rooting and perhaps installing a custom rom on it so I know what to expect before doing the same on the new one. This is my first try tinkering with the OS.

The reason for keeping the same model: the slideout kb, feature set, and general size (I like being able to pocket my phone, don't want a huge screen). Waiting for a comparable model without the ridiculously tiny internal memory of this one.

The reason for wanting to root/try a custom rom: bypass the ridiculously tiny internal memory problem by either moving all apps to SD, being able to delete protected apps I don't use, and/or maybe getting the OS to see the internal and SD memory as all one chunk? It's possible that rooting and installing an app that handles moving everything to SD will be all that's needed, don't know if the custom rom would even be required.

I've seen some guides out there but they are either incomplete (assume you know where to get a custom rom, don't link to tools they mention) or are a couple of years old now. Can anyone who has rooted and tinkered specifically to resolve this same issue first recommend a good strategy for resolving the ridiculously tiny internal memory problem, and point me to a reliable guide?

Thanks in advance,

spud

Ok, since lots of people are viewing this thread but not answering, I plunged ahead. Followed the first part of this sticky

http://forums.androidcentral.com/vi...how-root-custom-recovery-nandroid-backup.html

to root the device and installed Link2SD to move several apps and delete Facebook and Scavenger and a couple of other things. Installed a few apps I wasn't able to wedge on before and moved those to SD as well. Will see how it all goes and report back.

U don't have to install a custom rom. If u r not happy with ur battery life or performance is slow, u can install a custom rom. custom roms for my phone r pointless bec boot time is really slow. I wish someone made more roms
