Best way to Block Mail and Text while overseas?

Anyone know of a way to Block Mail and Text while overseas? Will be in Mexico, last time I rang up over 200.00 in data charges while roaming.....Want to leave phone on in the event of Family emergencies, (step daughter pregnant, In laws very old.....)

Anyone have any suggestions, I use Gmail, as far as I can tell you have to have 1 account on phone.

Set the phone into "Airplane mode" then just use WiFi to connect to the interwebz.

This will save you from calls, text messages, and data charges.

(note, I've totalled up a $3k (US) phone bill while I was in Japan, I know how you feel)
