Best way to get a "clean" install

So i just upgraded from an older cyanogen rom to the latest build however, there are a couple features that are not working that are supposed to according to the build specs for the ROM (IM app (it show up in task manager as running but there is no icon and i cannot get to the app) and exchange email (i get an FC every time i try to open it.

Based on these things, i really want to just wipe it and install everything as a fresh load. I just need to know the best way to do this?

I know i can install sappimg and start with the original 1.5 rom, then root, then do everything over, but i was wondering if there was a way to do it without all that??

Which phone are you using? I could only help with the Moto Droid as that is my first and only Android but someone else could help better knowing what phone you're using.
