So has anyone come up with a good idea to prepare for KitKat? I would rather prepare for it than have to deal with consequences afterwards in case there are any.

Updates are usually pretty seamless. Didn't think problems came up too often.

If KitKat is coming, it will have been tested by Samsung and Verizon first. Should be a good experience for you.

Did you have a more specific concern?

Well, under Kitkat you can't write user-selected files to the external SD card anymore. Google/Android evidently wants you to store your data in the(ir) cloud now instead of on your external SD card. Probably because that is much easier for them – and the NSA – to monitor what you're storing.
Not surprisingly, I don't like that. But unfortunately I don't know how to prepare for it other than holding off on Kitkat as long as I can, or until there is a solution for this. And by using an end-to-end encrypted cloud storage service outside of US jurisdiction like MEGA (50 GB free!).

I do NOT like anyone forcing me to do ANYTHING including where to put my stuff. The first time I would have been forced to use Google+ to rate an app was when I stopped rating apps. I and hundreds of thousands of other people paid good money for their SD cards and they should be allowed to use them as they see fit.

I take it there has so far not been a fix or workaround found for this ridiculous almost communistic way that whoever is doing this is doing it? Have they totally lost their minds and forgotten that we are adults and allowed to make our own choices?

I want my Blackberry back if this is how they're going to play the game.

My take on this is that Google, as other manufacturers, want to eliminate the external memory. There are a lot of inherent issues with external memory storage, thus, the trend to eliminate it (Apple never had external memory - although they GOUGE users for extra internal memory!). Having adequate internal memory is a better alternative to using problematic SD cards (I've had LOTS of issues with my Note 3 and "most" SD cards that I tried, and I'm not alone). Whether Google has an ulterior motive, is another question. I believe that Google has removed the SD card from their Nexus phones a while ago.

This link explains things well: KitKat and SD cards — what's fixed, what's broken and what's misunderstood | Android Central

There are numerous options to address, all which require root acces: manually (google the instuctions), use an SD-fix app (there are several I believe), use an Xposed Module, use a custom ROM.

Did I understand the last paragraph of the article correctly in that if you just want to store media on your SD card you should be ok and that the problem lies with things like installing or putting apps themselves on the SD card?

Does anyone know if KitKat is going to also affect the use of things like Dropbox for storage?

Deb, don't worry about a thing at all. This epic version of KitKat that Verizon finally releases for the Note 3 is going to be PERFECT! That's why it's taking anywhere from a month to easily 2 months longer than any other US carrier who've all updated their Note 3's to KitKat. It was just Samsung who purposely kept sending Verizon horrible beyond buggy updates, Samsung just wants Verizon to be stuck on 4.3 jelly bean for their Note 3's. They think its great that all other Note 3's have KitKat, they just have it hard up for the Verizon Note 3. But, because Verizon tests so vigorously and has these godly standards that allow them to release software updates without any bugs or headaches, it's going to be AMAZING when it does release in 2016.... Your whole life is going to change thanks to Verizon being so amazing testing their Note 3 update!!! Thanks Verizon!! But on the real side of things..... Make sure your battery is charged up, that'd be a good thing, and maybe a quick restart of your phone before you take the update and then another restart after everything installs again. But...you and I and quite a few other Note 3 owners probably won't have to worry about this for awhile. Verizon is busy testing and certifying updates for the S3, build nc1 which released today, so it can roam on the Telus network. They've been busy testing KitKat for the Droid DNA. So I'm sure other older phones need their updates first.

All serious kidding aside, KitKat will get here when it does. As to the SD storage, the comments above are completely inaccurate and untrue. SD storage is not prevented at all, what is changed is how apps can access and use files on SD storage. The issues rest solely with the app developers that have not upgraded their apps to handle the KitKat improved data security under the new OS. Back up your data before installing the KitKat, install KitKat, and enjoy.

Well, my comments are entirely accurate and ture.

You read it right Deb, media storage on an external sd card will be fine, so long as apps are writing to their own folder. I will venture a guess that all major developers have complied. (Sometimes it's good to be last, to get KitKat that is.)

Also, Dropbox is working quite well in KitKat. As all the other cloud storage options.

You should be fine.

When it hits far as I know those that aren't rooted don't have a choice. I'm sorry yours went so badly and hope I and others have better luck.

That's how I feel. I would totally go back to BB in that case.

I am running KitKat on my VZ Retail Note 3, rooted of course, and am glad I have it. There are pros and cons to everything. For me I have more pros. No issues with SD card read/wright and link2sd works great. My experience with KitKat over the last week or so has been positive. I can't speak for others but many are happy. Hope the official OTA works for all that are waiting for it.

Is there any way to avoid the update on stock for the note 3 and note 2? I used to root my phones but now I'm holding on stock for a bit. I held off on 4.3 on my note 2 until one day it decided to update itself smh. Is there any way to avoid that or is rooting etc my only option? Thanks!
