Best way to root a phone

I just tried one way of rooting my Moto G. It was ok but I didnt realize at the time that there wasnt a way to easily back out the rooting process. Is there a way of rooting the phone that is the most versatile/safest ? With what I had to do on finding the firmware files needed for my phone, didnt know if there was a process to backup the files currently used by the phone to make the process of rerooting the phone a little easier ?
