Best way to start fresh on Android L?

Do I update when L releases and factory reset or is there a better way? (Nexus 5)

Welcome to Android Central! Which device do you have? Usually, when I do a system update, I'll wipe the system cache partition afterwards. I would only do a full factory reset if the device was sluggish or otherwise still misbehaving afterwards.

Reboot into recovery and you'll find an option to wipe the cache. But a flickering screen is usually a hardware problem, not a software problem. It could be an LED that's going bad (the backlight for the screen is a panel of LEDs) or a loose connection.

Screen flicker is probably hardware. I have that issue too. Doesn't bother me. About half the time, I usually don't notice it.

Bear in mind that this process can take up to 10 minutes on the Nexus 5. Not sure why.

If it's the brightness variation as you stated and not a screen flicker that's bothering you, you could install Lux app and see if it helps at all.
