Best ways to keep tabs on your childs phone?

Hey everyone. I have a 12 year old with his first phone, and I wanted to know the best ways to monitor it. He has a windows phone right now, but I plan on getting him an a cheap android phone so that I can keep tabs on it. Can someone help?

Life 360/app helps w location of device battery level etc. Perhaps it does more.

Did you get a good response to this from elsewhere or did you settle on a solution? I have the same quandary. i just stopped using childsafe and am now trying familytime which seems to be an improvement. Familytime though seems to have limitations from what I am looking for, such as current location.
