I was taking pix indoors in a room with decent lighting. To my surprise, the pic without the flash was brighter, the one with the flash darker. Can anyone explain this curiosity to me?

If the flash is off, then the whole room is pretty much lighted equally.

IF the flash is ON, the closer elements in the picture has much higher light levels, the camera compensates for that by reducing the sensitivity to light. That will cause the pictures parts that are farther away from the camera to be under exposed and thus darker.

Same exact thing happens with any camera, whether manual or automatic.

The basic problem is a flash unit that does not have the power to fully light up the entire room.

It is not a defect in the phone's camera, just a matter of light physics.
