Since this thread was created, there has been some help, confusion, questions and even an article on AC.
I'm editing this post to both assist readers who needed a more detailed walk-through and add updated information that I've found to be beneficial.
The follow information is intended for the Droid X in reference to applying the 2.2 upgrade over an existing 2.1 update. The same basic process can be used for the original Droid.
Entire process only takes ~10 minutes after you backup your SD card.
1. Backup your SD card.
2. Format your SD Card.
3. Power off.
4. Remove battery, Press power button to dump residual power, reinstall battery.
5. Boot into recovery mode. (Hold home button and keep it held, push power button, release power button when the "M" logo appears and continue to hold home button until you see the triangle with exclamation point. Press the search button (magnifying glass))
6. Use volume rocker to navigate to "factory reset". Select "factory reset" by pressing the camera button. Navigate to "yes" to confirm reset.
7. When reset is complete, you'll see the selection list with "reboot system" selected. Press the camera button to select the reboot.
8. Let your device boot (you should be prompted with the activate device dialer - let it activate you). Tap through until you're prompted to create, sign into or skip logging into your google account. Select "skip" at this point.
9. You should be prompted with the "Backup Assistant". Select "skip".
10. You should now be prompted with another window titled "setup accounts". Choose "done adding accounts".
11. Let your default screens load for a min...
12. Go to menu-->settings-->privacy.
13. Make sure "back up data" is checked, then make sure "restore data" is unchecked, then go back to "back up data" and uncheck it. The point here is to make sure both "back up data" and "restore data" are unchecked.
14. You can now go to menu-->settings-->accounts and log into your google account.
15. After you log into your google acount, at the bottom of the screen you'll see yet another check box that by default is checked, asking if you want to backup your data to google. I Chose no and recommend this setting for now (after this mess, I'm thinking future-proof for the next update).
Finally, done.

Honorable mentions...
1. Both Launcher Pro and ADW are installing the pre-2.2 google search widget. If you're using either launcher, make sure you don't use it.
The new and correct widget has the blue "G" on the left side. The widget that does not have the blue "G" on the left is the old pre-2.2 widget.
2. If you get stuck on the "M" logo, even if you believe you've fully booted...

After some feedback and some thought I did a slew of factory resets. The thing I kept missing was what order to do what in.
Every time before a reset I would go into privacy--> and uncheck backup my data as well as uncheck factory restore. The problem is, even after a factory reset by default automatic restore is check and all apps downloaded will still start pushing down.
Most of us just automatically log into our gmail accounts. The only way to get a truly clean reset is to NOT log into your google account after a factory reset. Just skip it. When the next screen shows up with choices of accounts to choose from asking you if you're done adding accounts... still, skip it - tap done adding accounts. Once you're fully booted, go to privacy--> you actually have to ENABLE or check off "back up my data" so you can uncheck "automatic restore". Once "automatic restore" is unchecked, then uncheck "back up my data again". Now you can log into your google account and you are finally fresh.
*(you may see a screen again with a check box asking if you would like google to back up your data - uncheck this)
As per usual, please backup any important info such as your pictures and format your SD card right before you do your factory reset.

A word about ADW and LauncherPro - They do install the old 2.1 google search widget. When the old widget is used, it can get stuck on a screen. Make sure you use the new 2.2 google search widget (the one with the blue g button on the left of the widget) that was added with this update.

2a. Pull battery, reinstall and boot.
2b. If 2a. doesn't work, then follow steps 5 and partially 6. Do not select factory reset, rather just "wipe cache". This will get you back up and rolling.
