He announced this morning on Twitter that he is "done" with the X. He is recommending either the Incredible or the Fascinate (maybe). Don't look for any further work from him on the X.
I don't think that anyone can expect a full sbf for OTA 2.2 to come out from these people.
I'm sorry to read this news...but they tried.

Wow. That sucks. I wish I had more hands so I could give this news more thumbs down!

I saw that too. I'm very disappointed. I know that P3droid said last week that they would never stop trying but maybe he only speaks for himself and not TBH.

JUST SO EVERYONE KNOWS, we have not stopped working on the DX/D2...we are lifers and will work on it till we drop... 1:09 PM Oct 8th via web

In any case, I don't have the flexibility that these guys have to change phones so I'm sticking with my DroidX. I've been running the .15 leak, figuring if something were to happen with the boatloader, it was best to stay on the old base. Now the only remaining question is whether I risk a 2.1 roll back and OTA update or stand pat for now.

Bad news but he did also say...
Dont be sad, i hear the DX/D2 AOSP rom is now fully working except camera :) so we got some bad and some good.

It's my understanding (please correct me if i'm wrong) that the community chipped in and purchased him a DX developer phone and now a month or so later, he is washing his hands of it..

My personal opinion is that, that's not cool.
I realize he didn't sign a contract or anything, but it seems as though, he couldn't figure it out and said F it..

there are still a handful of people whom know about these phones and who are (to my knowledge) still working on them.

hopefully things will work out in our favor.

My suggestion is to take up a contribution from EVERYONE in the community and take out a full page ad in the new york times or wall street journal and demand motorola unlock our phones.
might be our only hope if our DX hackers can't find a way in.

I could use another upgrade and get something else, but don't want to. I still think the X is the best phone available. At least until next year. I did the OTA upgrade, somehow knowing the bootloader would NOT be unlocked anytime soon. I did that in case I needed to return the device and have it replaced. I didn't want any hassel from Verizon over that. The ROMS had some sort of issues, so did not want to go that way. I have a good working device, that will accept Gingerbread when it comes out..which is what I was making most of my decisions upon.

I want to keep the X until next year...and then see what is available that is UNLOCKED. Whatever I go with, it won't be MOTO.

I, too, am let down by Birdman's decision.

By that time they all will be locked up. I bet we wont have root soon too on new phones.

Don't forget that Birdman was the first one that got us root access.

Also, the developer phone that was purchased was through Alldroid and wasn't for his personal use. He took donations separately for his phone and it wasn't for the full retail price.

It sucks that he's giving up on it but just keep in mind what he has already done for us. Without him figuring out what he did, who knows how long we would have had to wait for root access or if we'd even have it yet.

We should be thanking him for what he's done.

So what if the guy wants to move on . The guy is a legend when it comes to Droid and the X . I thank him for what he has done. I have a GREAT phone , FlyX is all i need for now . His work allowed me to use wireless tether , run different ROMS , and make my phone look less like blur. SO......
THANK YOU BIRD. Hope the future brings us together on a different phone , because i will definately upgrade in 6 months with a different company!

+1 Exactly. I knew jack about modding and Birdman's work really helped me learn it and get comfortable doing it. I remember the first time I booted up FlyX and saw that animation...I thought, "@#$% that's cool!"

THANK YOU - You will be missed.

Its like the first time i ever got kissed , that kind of feeling. you are soo , relieved , and this rush comes over you . I love the FlyX Boot Animation.
Its not like i want bird to kiss me or anything , just so you know.LoL

We will always have root, congress declared that companies cannot stop people from rooting their phone. (this is my understanding of the ruling, correct me if it am wrong).

but this sux, c'mon birdman, dont be a quitter

They don't have to give us root. Just can't do anything legally to us if we do. I think they are having problems rooting the g2 last I heard. Something like they get root then when you reboot the phone it clears root.

Oh well...I appreciate whatever he did. I'm sure others will come along, but I'm thoroughly satisfied with the way my phone runs right now.

Sad news but I can't afford to switch phones. I'll wait till next year when carriers settle down (or tighten up) with the security measures they implement. And also when an LTE Android phone is released.

I'm not saying I'm not thankful for any effort he's put towards the DX.
but he certainly didn't create the scene all by himself.
lots of other folks were involved

I think koush, nenolod, ps3droid (and others) all have contributed big things behind the scenes.
without the boot strapper by koush, no roms or themes would even be possible.

many people have given us ROM's, tweaks, themes, boot strappers.. etc.
point being, is that he isn't top of the food chain in the DX scene.

I think it sucks that we supported him and his efforts and he bailed on us
but it is what is..
I still feel if someone can't hack the bootloader, our next best bet is to launch a public campaign against motorola.. and the more public the better.

Sadly, not enough people care. The percentage of users that even know what the bootloader is is so small that Motorola couldn't care less. I think we're getting to the point of locked devices across the board, specially after hearing about this G2 mess.
