bizarre issue on trying to root my S4..

I have a real funny problem with my S4. I have been trying to root it, but I always come to a roadblock on installing TWRP. I just noticed that the Android robot is dead but suddenly, everything will start working. Before I tried redoing the ROM, you would just see the dead droid, but today, when I reflashed it with the stock ROM, I am still seeing the dead droid and now, the no command text has been added to it. I am really puzzled about this and would like to resolve this issue. I am hoping that there is someone out there can help me with this issue.
