Problem started 5 days ago (8/11/2018}
Just updated to 9.0 two days ago (8/14/2018)
Problem persisted through/after the update with no change to the malfunction

A. Screen goes dark/blank/black during calls:
1. Using Google's pre-installed phone app.
2. Using "True Phone" by HampsterBeat
3. Using "Simpler Contacts and Dialer" by Simpler
4. Using Facebook Messenger VIDEO
B. Touchscreen becomes completely unresponsive.
C. Proximity sensor isn't the problem (I'm not proximate to it, not even close) and I don't want to turn it off...I need a solution, not a workaround.
D. Using a case that don't cover any part of the front of the phone, only sides, edge of bezel, and back. Nothing changes when I remove the case.
E. I'm not using a screen protector and I've cleaned the sensor 14 billion times.
F. I experienced this problem a year ago on my wife's phone. Factory reset works. I've been in [removed by mod] IT for 20 [removed by mod] years. I'm offended at the idea of having to rest the stupid thing.
G. What I know:
1. Fingerprint sensor reads my print and vibrates when touched but screen remains black and unresponsive.
2. Power button functions (double-press for camera, single-press to activate or deactivate phone, long-press to activate power off menu) and vibrates but screen remains black and unresponsive.
2b. Trust me on the above. I've confirmed it multiple ways.
3. I cannot hear anything but callers/people I call can hear me.
4. "Hey Google" --> "Call [contact or number] on speakerphone" works but screen initially goes dark for maybe 1/8th of a second until speakerphone engages and then doesn't have any problem after that.
5. Revoking "Draw over other apps" permission results in the dialer not being able to display.
6. Phone works as expected when connected to a Bluetooth.
7. While connected to (GD stuck on) a call waiting for the voicemail to time out, incoming calls don't register in any way.
8. Changing to handset (from speakerphone or Bluetooth) during call causes malfunction to occur.
9. I pretty much hate everything right now and my wife and kids would like me to say that they would appreciate your help too.
10. Just kill me.

I had this exact same issue on a Pixel 2 XL. Very frustrating, I dealt with it for about a week, just like you, trying all sorts things to figure out the issue. Hard reset didn't solve the problem for me. In the end I had to bring it in and get a replacement. Something is physically wrong with the sensors that cannot be fixed. Good luck, I hope this helps.
