the screen of my brand new nexus 6 goes blank while dialing. Why? Any suggestion how to fix the problem. By the way I have a tempered glass screen protector

It could be the screen protector making the proximity detector think that your face is near the phone, it could be the way you position your right hand at the top of the phone, it could be a defective proximity detector. We can't tell from here.

This is a known issue that will be addressed in the next update. I've went into accessibility settings and turned on the end call with power button option

So I take it this leaves both the display and the dialer on until you end the call? If so, it could be useful when dealing with @#$%^&*! phone menu systems.

No, I think he means that when the screen is blanked out there is no way to end a call, so turning on end call with power button option enables him to "hang up" the phone and, hopefully, bring the screen back to life.

I agree with the other poster: the problem is most likely either the screen protector or (less likely) the user is blocking the proximity detector with his fingers. It's not immediately obvious, but the proximity detector on the Nexus 6 is located just a few millimeters to the left of the top speaker.

I removed the tempered glass screen protector ( a waste of money) and have no issues with the screen going blank thereafter. But before I removed the protector I went into accessibility settings and turned on the end call with power button option. Didn't make any difference.. Now I am left with another problem. How the hell do I protect my nexus 6 screen. Any suggestion?

Yeah, get the EZGuardz glass screen protector. It has a cutout around the proximity sensor. EZguardz Premium Real Tempered Glass Screen Protector Cover for Motorola Nexus 6 | eBay

Or, get 6 plastic protectors for $4.99 6X Supershieldz HD Clear Screen Protector Shield for Motorola Google Nexus 6 | eBay

Both will work just fine.

Or just don't use a screen protector. My N6 goes fully naked, and its fine. I've had it since Nov or so.

Frankly, I agree - at least so far as the screen is concerned.

My Nexus 5 (now my wife's) was purchased the day it was released so it is now 2-1/2 years old and does not have a scratch on it

My Nexus 6 is six months old and similarly scratch free.

My only recommendation is for a case or bumper which has a slightly raised edge all around the front of the phone so that if the phone is placed face-down on a flat surface such as a desk the screen does not make direct contact.

I recently had the same problem the proximity sensor is at the top of the screen and if the cut out on the glass protection isn't wide enough it will make the sensor think you are holding it to your ear setting the on / off button to end calls is OK unless you need to use the key pad during the call.
So the only answer is make sure the cut out at the top of the glass is at least 4.5 cm

The 5.1.1 update fixes the issue.... No cutting involved.
