Bloatware

How much does VZW get paid by companies to put bloatware on their phones? It must be a lot, because it seems like it could be a huge public relations/advertising opportunity to do away entirely with it, and be know as the carrier that sells clean phones. I think they would win over many people just on that alone.

And how can it be a winning proposition for those companies? I mean really Blockbuster, how much revenue are you getting from people that buy stuff from you to use on their mobile phones?

Compare how many Razrs they sell compared to the nexus. There is your answer. Bloat is annoying but it doesn't detract from sales.

I always laugh when I look at the Verizon apps in the market. They're all some of the worse rated apps on there (and most complaints are about the bloat). Even a Lot of non-Verizon apps installed as bloat are rated pretty bad because of the same reason. Glad I can at least disable that junk, even if I can't delete.

Speaking of which....my stock browser won't work on wifi it only works on data...what crap

I always find it funny when developers start putting "please do not post about Verizon preinstalls as bad reviews, contact us via email", then the emails go completely ignored. If your business model needs to include your app being forced on people rather than making an app awesome enough that people will come get it, you're promoting it incorrectly.

Give me a home screen of (deletable) links to promote an app. Great. Give me a free trial of some software to entice me to try it out. Fantastic.

Put a program on a phone that I have purchased that I have no interest in, takes up memory, often runs in the background, and runs the risk of costing me money if I click on it by mistake? You bet your donkey I'm going to post a one-star asking you to find a different way to shill your goods.

So does anyone know how to get rid of bloatware?

It's like when you get a windows computer and they have Norton and a bunch of other junk preinstalled. But at least with Windows you can remove it. I think Android should have that option. If you don't want it remove It then don't it should be your choice not there's. How many people use the preinstalled apps anyway.

True, and I have done that on ICS. It's a nice feature, but you're still out the storage space.

If you have a phone with ICS, you can disable most of the bloat so that it doesn't run. It's almost like it's not there. [insert comment about slow OS updates on VZW here]

The last comment is so true. I'm still waiting on ICS for the Incredible 2. Verizon is so bad on updates.

First, let's remember that the customer for the OEM manufacters is Verizon (and pretty much all US carriers), not us.

Second, I've worked in the mobile games and apps industry. Some of our has shipped as a preload of various devices. Yes, that money is significant.

They can still put the Apps on there but let the customer have the option to remove the apps if no longer need or wanted.

Exactly. That's what gets me about the bloatware. I'd like it if my phone came with no preinstalled apps on it (besides the default Android apps and maybe a few apps from the manufacturer). But I can understand making deals to install other apps on there from VZW's perspective and I understand why companies would seek to put their apps on a phone as a preload. I'd be fine with the bloat if you could remove it. It's the fact that it comes on your phone by default and can't be removed that is the big problem for me. Disabling it like in ICS is a step in the right direction though. I'm a bit surprised VZW has left that enabled, to be honest.

My phone is still on Gingerbread I can't wait till I get ICS so I can be able to disable apps. But Verizon is taking so long with the update.
