blu energy x lte

Son just got an energy x lte, text icon shows he has 5 new text but when clicks on the icon nothing shows for new or even old text?

So any suggestions would be great, it's running 5.1 android.

You could try clearing cache for the launcher and messaging app in settings - apps - all and then restart the phone.
