bluetooth headphones all re-starting podcasts at different points

Before recent android "updates" it didn't matter which bluetooth headphones I used, my podcasts (on my samsung S5) always restarted at the same point (i.e. where I'd last stopped) and the headphone controls stopped and started the podcasts as expected. Now each set of headphones starts the podcasts in different places and the controls only partially work. So I now have to use the phone to control my podcast playing, pretty annoying.
Any suggestions how I get the old functionality back?
