Bluetooth issue - phone holds the speakers on?

I'm using a non-OEM BT system tied into my cars navigation/stereo system, so ordinarily, the stereo mutes when the bt audio is active on the phone. But the other day, either the car or the phone decided that bt audio was on, and nothing I could do short of turning bt off would fix the problem. Any ideas? Also, in a similar vein, is there a way to force the phone to use the bt headset (or, force it not to use it) when performing a voice search?
