Bluetooth performance

Hi All,

New to this forum. Current phone LG Optimus S. I expect to receive an upgrade to the EVO Design this week.

The Optimus was not a real strong performer on BT. For example, it had problems with answering an incoming call and immediately losing the connection. I have 3 different headsets and it had the same problem with all of them. Another issue was audio dropouts while listening to music using A2DP. Wondering what everyone else has experienced with the EVO Design.

Thanks,
Rob

I love it. No issues with BT, but the Design's speaker only plays left channel audio. Not sure why HTC decided that was a good idea, but it's still a solid phone. Dev support is somewhat lacking, but it is starting to pick up. I have a file that is supposed to give S-Off without using HTC's website to unlock the bootloader, but I haven't had any time to play with it to see if it works. I've been dealing with some personal issues at home that have made it pretty much impossible for me to do anything dev related (amateur dev at that). Hopefully, that will change soon.

There are a few things going on sdx that look promising. We have a cm7 port in the works as well as a custom kernel for overclocking. It's all still a work in progress, though. In any case, the Design has tons of potential. It's a great phone and I'm eager to see more devs get involved.

Thank you for the info. I am looking forward to getting EVO Design. The Optimus S was a good entry level phone, but I found it to be lacking in the ROM department. For the last month or so, I have been bumping into the low memory issue, even though I try to install all my apps on the SD card if I can. That was my motivation behind ordering the Design.

Hope things settle down at home.

Take Care,
Rob

No problem. I have about 70 apps installed, none of which have been moved to sd, and I still have loads of memory. 680MB available for storage and RAM usually sticks around 250MB when nothing is running. Plenty of room for multitasking and switching been apps with ease.

I also use Script Manager with the V6 Supercharger script and the 3 G Turbocharger script as well as the Kickass Kernelizer script. Makes my phone snappy as can be and totally eliminates lag. Probably the best app I have on my phone because of the performance boost. Benchmarks before and after prove that it's a quantifiable improvement, too.

I would definitely sign up for an account at sdx-developers.com if I were you to get a good idea of where this phone stands with 3rd party support and to have a look at what mods are available and in the works. You won't regret it. I'm HampTheToker over there, so feel free to post in any of my threads or send me a PM if you have any questions or anything. I'm always glad to help when I can.

Wow, thanks for the tips. I will probably take some of your suggestions.

So far, the phone is working well. BT is great for music as well as calls. Navigations works great also. I have set up 2 email accounts and they, too are working well. I am glad to see that they (don't know if it's Google or HTC) added an option to empty the Trash folder in Mail. That was a big hangup for me with Froyo. I thought having to delete mail items twice by selecting them individually was lame. This prompted me to install MailDroid, but it took up additional memory which was puny to begin with. Contacts and Calendar syncing with HTC Sync worked great.

One item I have found lacking is the ability to just plug the phone in to my computer via USB and looking at the SD card in the phone as a storage device so I can copy files back and forth. HTC Sync has some capabilities there but I like the simple do-it-yourself approach where I pick and chose files and copy them over. Maybe I'm missing something, since I am on a steep learning curve with HTC's UI and "way of thinking" compared to the plain vanilla Froyo UI.

Another item I am missing is a widget that combines today's calendar entries with tasks and shows them on the home screen. I got used to this concept when I had a WinMo 6.1 phone. When I moved to the LG Optimus S, I ended up getting Companionlink for syncing with Outlook on the PC. A side benefit was that it came with DeJa Office (contacts, calendar, tasks, ...). DeJa had a widget that did just that. I might decide to install DeJa just for the widget since it automatically syncs with the Android Calendar and Contacts.

So many things to try, so much to learn... How else would a grown man can spend time and money? HaHa.

Install as many apps as you want, bro. Go nuts. This phone can handle anything you throw at it. I don't use calendar features or anything, but I'll look into those things for you if you'd like.

Edit: if you go into Menu/Connect to PC it gives you an option to choose your default connection type. Either Charge Only, Disk Drive, or ask every time. I have mine set to prompt me every time I connect it because I don't always need to transfer files when I connect to my PC. Sometimes I use adb and sometimes just to charge. I like having the option to choose.

I believe there's an app called Automount SD that automatically mounts usb mass storage every time you connect without dealing with any prompts. Might wanna look into that.

Thanks for the tips.

I solved my calendar/task widget issue by placing the calendar widget and a simple task widget from the market. My need for tasks is not fancy. Just a place to put things I need to do today. The calendar widget works OK, too. It shows the next upcoming appointment in the calendar. All I need to do is to see that there's something on the calendar today.

I will try the suggestions you made re: connecting to PCs. I need to play with the different options to see which feels most comfortable.

Thanks again,
Rob

Yea, so I got the USB connection thing sorted out. Thank you for the tip.

I ended up installing the previous software I had for syncing with Outlook on my PC. It's called Companionlink and it works with Deja Office on the phone. It has contacts, calendar, tasks, notes and a bunch of other stuff. Companionlink runs on the PC and can sync with the phone over a USB cable as well as local WiFi. It actually syncs Contacts, Calendar, Tasks and Notes between Outlook, Deja Office as well as the native Android components for these respective functions. It has a widget for Tasks and Calendar items as well.

So far a very happy camper with this phone.

I did run into a glitch with Skype using bluetooth for the audio. I can hear the audio through my bluetooth earset, but Skype doesn't pick up the sound from the B/T microphone in the earset. Apparently this is a known issue with the most current version of Skype on Android. There is a clunky workaround, but ...

I am mentioning this stuff in case someone else runs into these situations.
