Good morning,

The Whatsapp app icon shows the number of unread messages (in my case 20) I get 1 message, only instead of showing 21 unread messages, there were always 20. I then clicked on the new message and the unread message counter remained 20. What happened? I hope I have been clear;

Welcome to Android Central! Which phone? Are you using the stock launcher or a 3rd party Launcher like Nova?

Go to Settings>Apps, select the launcher, and Clear Cache, then Force Stop. Now go back home and see if the badge still shows 20.

Each app decides how many unread messages show on the app badge. WhatsApp apparently is 20. While you may have more than 20 the count stops at 20 and will go down when you go under that. This same discussion came up multiple times when Twitter only allowed 24 unread count. Tapatalk only allows 24 but my email allows over 100. It's from the app, it's not your device, it's not fixable, you can't change it, we can't help you change it. There's a link to contact the app developer at the app page on the Play Store where users can put in suggestions and offer criticism.
