Boot to recovery

Is it possible without booting to system first? I tried VOL+ and power, but it doesn't work.

That is the right combo, but I yhink its one of the issues we are having with the recovery atm. I know if you have the stock recovery installed that combo works with an update.zip on the root of sdcard.
