So HTC is supposed to allow the bootloader of their devices to be unlocked, right? I'm not a developer, just a new Resound owner, so I was wondering what the difference between what the current developers are working on with S-off and the bootloader unlock process through HTC.

Sorry of its a noob question...I'm not new to rooting just new to HTC (came from Moto DroidX). Thanks, and I look forward to seeing what the awesome dev community will do with this device!

HTC is allowing bootloaders to be unlocked (or s-off), but VZW isn't. The developers are trying to find a way to "hack" the bootloader to unlock it, which will achieve the same thing we could have done through the HTCdev site had good 'ol verizon allowed it.

Either way, you want to avoid using official unlock methods because it can track who has a voided warranty!

HTC stating they were unlocking bootloaders is turning out the same way as when Moto said bootloaders would be unlocked by the end of this year.
Verizon is pulling all of the strings, which is so unfortunate. The minute manufacturers started treating Verizon like some sort of essential business partner instead of the dumb pipe that they are, is the minute that Android's openess turned not-so-open.

I'd rather have our mostly open community than a certain little spyware package that some other carriers seem to like? I mean it's one thing for Verizon to claim that we're all miscreants for wanting to own "our" phones but it's another entirely to load up "our" phones with garbage and then not give us a way to get rid of it. So I say hang it all, if the carriers(Verizon) want to play dirty, let's play dirty. We get permanent root, we get rid of their bloat, we get wi-fi tethering, we get unlimited data(most of us) and they can take a long walk off a short pier.
