Bottom buttons don't light up

This is my new replacement phone, first thing I noticed is the lights for the buttons on the bottom will only light up after a reboot. After that they won't ever turn on. Very annoying in the dark as I noticed last night, I know the muscle memory locations for the buttons but I wasn't the lights.

Is there a setting or is this one defective?

They're supposed to only turn on when it's sufficiently dark.

Or was my other one defective (it is going back for screen separation) because those lights turned on all the time? These ones do work if I block the light sensor but only for a few seconds

Ok, I was typing same timed as you. So maybe the light sensor on my other phone was defective and I just didn't know it. Thanks
