Bought Nexus 7 off ebay- Questions

So I bought a SEALED Nexus 7 16gb last week off ebay and so far I haven't noticed anything wrong with it and I'm hoping it isn't defective. If it ends up being defective, am I just done for since I ordered it off ebay? or is there a way to get a replacement device?

Depends on where the seller got the unit. Example: If they bought it as Sam's Club Google will not cover it. If they ordered it from the play store you will have no problem working with Google.

I will probably end up going through Asus if I have problems since I believe even if it was bought through the play store, I'll need to be signed into the same account it was bought with in order to get the replacement? Can anyone confirm if this is true?

I work for Vizio and how our warranty works is that you have to buy our devices from an authorized retailer. Ebay is not an authorized retailer, so your 1 yr manufacture warranty is not valid. The same is true if you bought it at an authorized retailer in the USA and took it across the border to Canada.

I am not sure if this is the same for Asus but my guess is that you might be hosed.
 
Just say it was a gift there is no way other than you telling them it came from Ebay for them to find out.
 
I know you want to be prepared but I wouldn't be worrying. I bought a galaxy tan new from ebay 3 months ago and no problems. Love it. And hope you enjoy your new tablet.

The same is true if you bought it at an authorized retailer in the USA and took it across the border to Canada.

That is right. I have had warranties refused from other big companies because I bought it on ebay. They do not consider you as the first owner, and even though it is sealed, they consider it as a used item.
 
I would check with square trade. They will sell warranties for eBay purchases.

That's actually wrong, and I've been through it personally to know. Google is acting as a manufacturer and are taking warranty issues for the first year. After that Asus takes over for a second year relating to screen issues only. If Google doesn't give you a satisfactory answer Asus will.

The entire "Google won't help" started on this forum when people started "quoting" what phone reps said to them. I think we had some trolls slip bad info past us, or else Google really changed their mind after launch.

Actually however, let me add that Ebay may be an exception as others have said. If you bought it at any store (including Sam's and Gamestop) Google would still help. Ebay is considered a person to person sale so it's up to them to determine what they do. I can guess, but we don't know. My guess is that since Google tracks device activations if you are the first person to activate the device your warranty should be automatically registered. Vizio products work a bit differently and have no digital paper trail. I know that Asus is currently telling people NOT to register their warranties with them as Google has already done so. Again, we are speculating.

Ok you can disagree with Google if you want but Google will not help you with the Sam's Club units. I know this as a fact. I have already dealt with this issue with 2 of the unit I bought from Sam's Club. So enjoy spreading misinformation but you are completely wrong when it comes to the Sam's Club units.

Not all the 3rd party vendors have this issue. Sam's Club has a contract with Google about this and if Google honors the warranty of any unit sold by Sam's Club for the first year of ownership Sam's Club can sue Google for damage suffered because Sam's Club's contract allows Sam's Club to sell 1 year extended warranties for there Nexus7 units for profit.

So please before correcting someone do more research to make sure your right.

You need to call Google again then if they tell you to go back to the store. I have an email with a return label to prove it. It was a screen issue, maybe that's the difference. I trust what you were told, but someone at Google obviously can change that.
 
Just to add Staples, GameStop, and I think Radio Shack sell warranties as well. You need to escalate the issue with Google.

Yes but none of them pursued contracts to block Google warranty support. My cousin is an exec. in the Sam's Club parent company and did some of the negotiations for the contract with Google.

As for the screen issue it is being dealt with by Asus and Google is just handling the processing. Plus the screen issues have become a big enough issue that they are being classified a type of recall and overrides warranties. The 2 units I had to go back to Sam's Club for replacement were not with the screen which Google made sure of before telling me I had to goto the store.

So what happens if I walk into Sam's Club, buy a Nexus and decide not to buy their extended warranty, then something under warranty coverage on the unit fails?

Are you saying that Sam's Club would then be my sole channel for warranty relief? Because their site stipulates a 30-day return/exchange policy only on tablets, and requires a receipt.

When in store at Sam's Club and you buy the Nexus7 they will inform you that without their extended warranty you will be SOL for the first year and warn you that Google can not offer warranty support. But yes you can come in for a replacement with a receipt in the first 30-days with or without their warranty.

:eek: Glad I didn't buy mine from Sam's Club, then!

For their own legal sakes, I hope they are cutting the boxes open and removing the manufacturer's warranty cards. Otherwise I've got some lawyer friends who I can just hear salivating right now. If they sell it with the box intact and the card within, then tell you that because you didn't pay their blackmail fee the warranty is null and void, ohhhhh... that's got "class action lawsuit from hell" written all over it.

It's the first case I've ever heard of them actually selling an INFERIOR product at the same price as everyone else (since everyone else's version comes with a 1-year warranty at no charge).

Thanks for mentioning this - my renewal is coming up, and I was wondering whether to renew. Now I know.
 
Yes I agree it is a low down underhanded way of business and I hope it hits the fan as you say with a case action law suit because it has to be a dishonest way to make profit.
