I am a guy, that for years, have gotten the latest Samsung, Nexus, Pixel phone on release day one. I did so because I enjoyed the latest and the greatest. Phones I recently had includes Note 9, Note 8, S8+, S7 Edge, Pixel XL, Nexus 6P, Nexus 6 to mentioned the most recent (also still have OnePlus 6T).

A week ago, I bought Pixel 2 XL 128gb Panda for a great price from a friend. It's been my daily driver since then and I came to the realization that I honestly don't need the latest and the greatest any more. This 2 XL is more than one year old but oh MY, the camera and performance is AMAZING. So, going forward, I am pretty much done paying $1,000+ for flagship phones on release date. You can literally wait for 4 to 5 months after a release date and get the same phone used in excellent condition from Craigslist, eBay or Swappa for about half the MSRP on release date.

Phones are so advanced now that jumping from one generation to next is really trivial. But you can for few months after that latest generation is released get it for half the price.

I am enjoying my over a year old 2 XL phone just like it was bought on release date is all I am trying to say

Not only that, but you can keep it for 2 more years, and have the latest software on it, or keep it for 3 years before a new version of Android, that you won't get, comes out. And if you download and install Camera 3, you'll have the latest Pixel 3 camera app with Night Sight.

I recently tried the Essential Phone, Pixel 2 and OP6T but ended up going back to the Pixel 2xl. Picked up a like new Panda with no screen issues. It's a great phone and I don't feel the need to upgrade to a newer phone. Was able to get ownership transferred which came with 2 years left on the warranty.

My 2 xl already have night sight and it is amazing. Why do I need that apk?

Yeah I had a pixel 2 XL for a year and was eyeing the 3. But I dropped my 2 XL and it shattered into a million pieces. Didn't think it was worth getting fixed so I just went ahead and got the Pixel XL.

It's only a tiny bit slower than the 2 XL. But smoother than the 2 in some places which was surprising. The 2 had better haptics and the always on display was amazing.

The only thing I miss about the 2 is the always on display. The rest is just as amazing.

So yes, getting the latest phone means absolutely nothing these days. They're all almost the same.

Having said that, I am now thinking of getting the screen replaced on the 2 XL. Let's see. It's costing me around £200. I don't know if it's worth it.

What do you think? Should I just keep the Pixel XL or get the 2 XL repaired?

I can not stand that double huge top and bottom chins on the original Pixel. Ugly, very.

Also, Pixel XL will not be receiving and more OS upgrades. Android P was the last one. 2 XL will still receive Q and R. So good for another 2 years. I think it is worth getting that screen replaced if you know a place to do it right.

Great devices bought mine a few months ago waiting on the pixel 4 to be released next year and hopefully it has a face recognition feature like Apple has which works great.

I will be lying if I say I can wait that long. I'll probably be watching Craiglist for used posting and snag a Pixel 3 XL 128gb for $500 when they drop to that in the next 3 months or so. Rinse and repeat for Pixel 4

I do the opposite. I buy new and a year later upgrade and sell mine for 450 to 500. Slightly more expensive than your method.

I used to do it that way. But done for now lol.

I'd rather buy your mint phone for $450, use it for another 9 to 12 months, and sell it for $250 at least. This way, it costs me ONLY $200 a year to cycle through phones vs your $500 hehehe.
