Bricked G1-Warranty Question

Alright I was downloading apps on my G1 when suddenly the screen distorted and went crazy on me, so I turned it off and tried to turn it back on, but all I got was a black screen. So my G1 was a black screen. I called HTC and they said my phone was still under warranty (no warranty on T-Mobile) but it won't guarantee a no fee repair and I had to send it out to see if they would need to charge me or not. If I need to pay and decline I need to pay $28 to get it sent back to me. That's no choice for me. My question is has anyone sent out a bricked G1 to HTC itself and needed to pay for the repair even though you were still under warranty?

How long have you had your G1? I had a similar experience. I took it in to the T-Mobile store and they replaced it free. I may be wrong, but I think they will replace it for up to 12 months. Sorry I can't help more.
