Brightness levels between M9 and M8 (m9 much darker?)

Just got my M9 today, all charged up and ready to go. Sat down and compared it to hubby's M8 and I notice that the M9 is MUCH darker. We compare some sites, download a few themes and even on max brightness, the M9 is not anywhere near as bright. Is this a fluke? Normal? Lemon M9? Just looking to see what other users are saying.

I never had the M8, but with my M9, I have the brightness set at around 33%. I can't phantom at 100% it not being bright enough. That is really bright on my phone.

This appears to be a common complaint from users and reviewers who have both phones to compare. Apparently they used a lesser screen in the M9. The other complaint is the speaker volume is less than the M8. Can you do a side by side comparison of that for me? Pretty please with cherries on top?

Are you sure it's not the cooler calibration they chose this time around? My M9 is really bright with max brightness and auto turned off. I don't have my M8 anymore, but I don't remember it being any brighter. The auto brightness does seem a bit more aggressive this time around though. Have you done the comparison with auto brightness turned off?

Give it a couple of weeks then check again. I think you will find that after you give it time the screen will get better and brighter. It's been the same for the M7, M8 and now the M9.

No they did not use a lesser screen in the M9. They used a much better screen.

HTC One M9: A second opinion | Android Central

Quoted from Android Central article
"With an M8 and M9 side by side, the colors of the newer phone appear somewhat washed-out, while also being noticeably cooler. Maybe that's just display tuning. Whatever's causing it, though, the result is a screen that doesn't come close to reaching the high bar set by its main rival, the Galaxy S6.

In years past, HTC flagships always shipped with the very best LCD displays. With the M9, unfortunately, that's no longer the case."

That's more the calibration level, not actual brightness levels. It is a little cooler in color temperature, but the nits are higher than the M8.

Please share with us your source indicating a "lesser" screen was used. I sat my M9 next to an M8 and both had the same brightness to them. .

i noticed it as well and have been using the app, lux auto brightness. it's like 3 bucks but totally worth it. no ads or anything... just super easy to set min and max for your auto brightness settings. barely uses any system power too.

Your pics prove what I was saying. You have auto brightness on. The M9 has a more aggressive auto brightness. Uncheck it on both phones, then compare.

Whatever. The screen sucks. Comparing it to an S6 is like comparing an ancient phone from 2012 to the best and the brightest from tomorrow.

Undoubtedly you had the M9 set to max and the M8 set to 50%.

The auto brightness is highly aggressive to the low end with the M9. The most I have ever seen on any phone I've had. Fortunately, I don't use it. It is one the first settings I tweak by turning it off and setting it where I like. It would be nice if one could set the aggressiveness. Then, I might be inclined to use it.

I use it, but I know what you mean. That's what I was saying. I always have to turn it off when I watch vids or view pics.
