Broken Notifications

My FB Messenger will not alert me with a notification (no sound, nothing in the status bar, no numbers on icon) when I get messages. All other allowed app notifications are working. Settings in the app, and on my phone are all set to allow notifications - sounds, vibrations, previews, status bar, number badges. I've allowed EVERYTHING and no dice. Also ensured it's allowed to run in the background.

I'm using a Samsung S8+ running the latest Android software update and FB Messenger software updates. I've tried changing the sounds (in case it was a glitch), uninstall/reinstall, and clearing the cache. That's in addition to going through every item in the phone and app settings.

If you have any advice, I'd really appreciate it!

Welcome to Android Central! Do you get notifications when the app is open?

You mentioned that you ensured it's allowed to run in the background -- does this mean you made sure Battery Optimization is off?

I do not get sound when the app is open, but I will get badge numbers on the pop up bubbles. And I have checked that Battery Optimization is off.

Long press the Facebook app icon >tap info>notification on?

Try clearing the app cache/data for FB Messenger in Settings>Apps, then Force Stop. Then open it again and log back in. Does the problem persist?
