broken screen need to recover pictures, always ran a passcode

I recently broke the screen on my htc one m8, I desperately need to recover pictures off of the phones internal memory. the screen still has some function as I can swipe when I get a call and it will answer, I could probably even remember my code. when you plug this phone into a pc does it ask you if you would like to connect with the pc? and what does that screen look like?
