BT /WiFi Tethering Question(s)

I rooted my phone a long while back but just installed wildstang's Gingerbread ROM. Now I'd like to finally stick it to Verizon's attempts to charge for tethering. I want to enable either the 3G Hotspot or a Bluetooth hotspot for my iPad. I know that a stock Android GB has a free app built-in. Is there a hack around VZW's hijack of the free hotspot feature, or am I stuck with paying for an app to do that?

I've tried the Android WiFi Tether app and...it sucks. While it seems to work, my device looses its connection regularly, and I'm unable to use WPA2 or the MAC address filter. Every time I'm in poublic and use that app to enable the hotspot for my iPad, I'll see a half-dozen other devices connecting to my hotspot!

I don't know if this will work for a custom rom but this works for me on a stock non-rooted incredible:

  1. Select "Phone"
  2. Dial "##778" and call
  3. Select "Edit Mode" on pop-up dialog box
  4. Enter "000000" for Please Enter Password
  5. Select "Security"
  6. Select "S.IP DUN User Name"
  7. Delete the "dun." part of the number (ie: it should read as: [yourmobilenumber]@vzw3g.com)
  8. Select "OK"
  9. Press the "BACK" button
  10. Select "M.IP Default Profile"
  11. Select "DUN NAI"
  12. Delete the ".dun" part of the number (ie: it should read as: [yourmobilenumber]@vzw3g.com)
  13. Select "OK"
  14. Press the "BACK" button
  15. Select "Commit Modifications"
  16. The phone will reset
  17. Once booted, go into "All Programs", select the "3G Mobile Hotspot", Adjust your "Router Name" and "Password" (if you desire, but recommmended), and change the security to WPA(TKIP) (this is the only setting I've tried so far-other posts said the WPA2 is buggy)
  18. Select "3G Mobile Hotspot - Press to turn on" (It will prompt you that you need the Verizon Mobile Hotspot Feature- just hit "Do not remind me again" and "OK") (Also, I am using Windows 7x64, and the wifi picked up the signal right away, but it took a moment to identify- but it connected to the internet cleanly and the connection is fast)
  19. Optional: Download "Hotspot Toggle" from the Android Market- it's a widget toggle to turn it on and off- seems to work good.

WARNING: If you get in this menu, don't mess with anything else. It could make your phone unusable.

What I believe happens when you do this is it tells the hotspot app to use your phone's 3G connection instead of one that Verizon charges extra for.

Interestingly, this also works with the incredible 2. So this might work on most HTC phones

Didn't work for me on my rooted original DInc with Gingerbread. I press the Phone button on my home screen and, when the keypad pops up, I enter ##778 but no dialog box pops up in response. Pressing Call at that point (for the heck of it) seems to make the phone dial but I get nothing else. Darn--that sounded too good to be true...

<EDIT> Well, I did some searching and discovered that EPST was apparently disabled due to an update of the "My Verizon" program. I tried freezing the app with Titanium Backup and rebooted which didn't change anything. I then thawed the program and simply uninstalled it. After rebooting still no dice. Neither ##778 or ##778# are working.

So, how do I re-enable EPST menu access?
