Bump charging...

Hey all, I have an incredible right now, and I'm thinking of picking up a thunderbolt. (i've had 2 speakers go to crap on me and I dont want to get a thrid at this rate). While I love my incredible, the one thing I hate (beside the speaker) is the bump charging. has ANYONE heard whether or not this will or will not be a problem on the thunderbolt? I'm assuming this is a problem limited to the incredible but a little confirmation never hurt anyone :).

Great question! I am wondering the same thing. Supposedly the Dinc issue was hardware problem which is why it was never corrected. I have Google'd other HTC phones similar to the Thunderbolt and have found no solid references to them needing to be "bump charged".

I'm sure whatever the design flaw was was corrected over the course of the last year.

This is new to me, my son has the Incredible, got it back in January, can you give me a little info on this bump charging problem. I haven't noticed it with his phone or just don't know what to look for.

If you plug your phone in to charge it, leave it on and then leave it to charge, and it gets to "fully charged", the Dinc will start using the battery at that point instead of running off of the charger and keeping the battery charged.

You'd notice it because as soon as he unplugs it in the morning (assuming he plugs it in when he sleeps), the battery would immediately drop from 100% to 85.. 80...

If you DON'T leave the phone on, then you'll start out the day with about 99%.

Bump charging is when you charge it up to 100% (green Light) and then turn off device and plug it back inand charge it once again to 100%( Green light). It is suppose to "top" it off for that extra 10% or so. The Dinc needed it to get the last bit of charging. Of course that is many, many discussion and debates

Is this a problem with all Dinc's? I'm going to check his when he gets home from school. I probably don't notice because he plug his phone in when going to bed and in the morning he shut it down before going to school.

I hope that they have fixed this. There is nothing more agravating than unplugging the phone and have it drop down to 93% in two minutes.

ugh wish I knew I would have gotten him a different phone, but all in all it's still a good phone.

You learn to deal with it. Either shut it off before bed or turn it off in the morning while you're taking a shower/getting ready to let it "bump charge".

Just do what a lot of us do....

I have a wall charger and 2 1800mah batteries. One is always in the charger (which gives the battery a FULL charge...) and I just swap batteries each day before I head off to work. Your boy could do the same before school each day.

yeah he is only 13 in school most of the day that's why I don't think he noticed, but on the weekends he will say wow mom I need an extended battery my phone dead so he will keep it in charger while using.

Yup! There you go! If I don't bump charge or shut off, I'm almost dead by Noon. :)

The Dinc has terrible stock battery life relative to other phones, but the bump charge issue gave it even a worse rap.

Don't do it! Just accept the slightly decreased battery life for increased long-term battery health.

ugh and he is stuck with it for two years, well he is not complaining yet and I'll probably buy him a different phone for his 14th birthday at full price, would like to get him the TB but don't know if that will take his unlimited data plan away. b'day not until sept tiered data will be in full affect then.

Well, if the extended battery with the new battery door will last him the whole day (especially the OEM/Verizon one). That may get him through till September or 2 years from now. ;)

True. I think I am the one haviing a problem with it now that I know lol he don't have a clue.

To add to your response in regard to the Incredible, the generic version of the term "bump charging", applicable to any device and/or phone, is simply when you periodically hook it up to a charger to give it that extra "bump" because you are concerned about running low now or later. Doesn't have to be a full top off to 100 percent. Just a "bump". Might get to 100 percent, might not (if you don't have time to let it finish).
