I am always leery of things like Craig's list, because you may not be able to track down the seller, the device may be blacklisted, etc...

From an AOSP M8

Forget the clean ESN (or IMEI). The owner can report the phone lost 5 minutes after you pay for it, and it's no longer "clean".

Make sure you do the exchange in a carrier's store, and that they transfer the phone to your account when you pay the seller. That way, the seller is no longer the registered owner, and can't make reports on the phone, only you can. (It's such a common scam on Craig's List it ought to be called the Craig's List Scam.)

I've bought two phones off swappa, my M8 and an iPhone 5, and both were easy. That is not to say there aren't scammers on swappa. But I agree, Craig's list is full of scammers.
