Buying Droid charge on craigslist

The seller says it has a clean esn, but is there any way to check other than going to a Verizon store? Can I call them on the spot and ask customer service about the esn? Its a cash transaction, so if the guy wanted to scam me its not like I could file a claim with Paypal.

I've never bought a used phone on craigslist, just trying to protect myself.

Call Verizon. They can tell you and send you a SIM card.
